Abigail ( Abbi ) Marie Salyers
May 21,
2005

My dearest friend, I can not express the loss
that your family feels, the sadness, is overwhelming. Your boys look
for you all the time, "Abbi, please come out and play". I look for
you, needing the one thing that only you could give, your love. I never knew
that an animal could be so loving and loyal until I met you. I will keep
your blanket by my bed, and always a prayer before I close my eyes, that
someday you and I will meet again in a better place. With all of our love we
say goodbye. |
The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Weeble June 8, 2005
 |
Godspeed, Weeble.... Also known as Ladybug, long
ago called Vixen, a puppy mill mom. Retired with a family & 2 little girls.
Allowed to free feed, she quickly became overweight, unable to play with the
little girls. "AKC Sheltie Free to good home", the classified ad stated.
Replaced by a Christmas puppy. The mother said a tearful goodbye as we drove
away. Somewhat sad at first, Ladybug quickly fit in with Josie & Spencer to
become part of the Bare's Den. Weeble, as we soon nicknamed her because she
wobbled but didn't fall down. She survived cancer & the passing of all the
original Bare's Den: Penny, Josie, Prince & Spencer (Annie too). Nurse Weeble....
always concerned with her ill brothers & sisters, always with a sorrowful look
when they passed. She was the sweetest & most caring soul. Her illness came
quickly & took us by surprise. A little before 5 this evening, she quietly
passed to the bridge. Tonight she's with the rest of the den, running & playing,
pausing to look down... A new star shines brightly tonight. Our little Weeble,
you will be missed. |

Dusty 1995 - June 8, 2005
I
was privileged to adopt Dusty from
SRCI in 1997. He was
approximately 2 years old at the time of adoption, so he was only 10
years old.
Dusty
was a puppy mill
survivor,
who came into rescue bald from mange mites, heartworm positive, full
of intestinal worms and mentally shutdown. It took many months for
him to become physically healthy and much, much longer to gain some
semblance of mental health.
Dusty
had been dealing with some health issues for the last couple of
months but seemed to be doing well in general. The decision to
release him
to the Rainbow
Bridge
was
very unexpected.
Please love on the pets you've been entrusted with and hug them
until they squirm, because you never know when they will have to
leave you, sometimes very unexpectedly. |

Rex 1997 - February 20, 2006
Little Rex -
adopted by Larry and Beth York in September of 2002. Little
Rex came to us an overweight, lethargic dog with sparse fur, due to
his underlying thyroid imbalance. During his two-and-a-half
years with us, we came to appreciate not only his perky ears and
teddy-bear button eyes, but his sense of humor and his sensitivity
to certain sounds. We loved his funny mannerisms, the way he
had with corn on the cob, and his laid-back style. Little Rex
passed away on February 20, 2005 with bone cancer. Too soon to
the Bridge, little guy, but we miss you and look forward to the day
we will join you.
Love, Mom and Dad |

Prince
September 25, 2004
Prince
Websters defines "Prince" as:
1 a : MONARCH, KING b : the ruler of a principality or
state
2 : a male member of a royal family; especially : a
son of the sovereign
3 : a nobleman of varying rank and status
4 : one likened to a prince; especially : a man of
high rank or of high standing in his class or
profession
He may have been any one of these but he will always
be remembered as one of the Bare's Den. Prince didn't
have it easy until he was rescued. He spent the
beginning of his life outside. He spent his remaining
years inside, as a member of our family, free to come
& go as he wished. Cared for and dearly loved, Prince
passed to the Bridge Sep 25, 2004, due to
complications of cancer. "In time we will meet again
at the Bridge" |

Taylor January 21, 2005
Taylor came into rescue
in 2003. Her elderly owner who had MS passed away. At the time
Taylor came into rescue, she was 14 and there was a 12 year old
Belgian Tervuren with her. Taylor and Kindle went to
the same foster home. There wasn’t an active Belgian Sheepdog rescue
group in Indiana, but the breed club was willing to help rehome
Kindle. However, someone who had been looking for a Tervuren heard
through the Collie Rescue grapevine that Kindle was available. The
equivalent of an adoption fee for Kindle was donated to Sheltie
Rescue and Kindle went to her new home in Ohio.
Taylor
had multiple fatty tissue tumors removed when she first came to
rescue and she stayed with Dr. Baker through recovery and then
returned to her original foster home. It was determined if the
tumors returned, no more surgery would be attempted due to her
advanced age.
Taylor was a loner because
she didn’t like the young whipper snappers in her foster home to
jostle her and knock her down, but when none of the other dogs were
around she liked to get pats and hugs.
Towards the end, Taylor lost
weight rapidly and it was decided to release her to the rainbow
bridge on Friday, January 20, 2006 to be reunited with her owner. |

Corky
Wednesday,
January 25, 2006
We lost our sweet Corky late this
afternoon. His kidneys had failed him to the point he was in
pain and unhappy. We were with him and we buried him on the
Barton's land with Hank and Teddy and so many others. Our
Corkman, as we affectionately called him will be remembered
forever... his adorable face, his funny little walk and the fact
that he never met a stranger will stay with us always. We are so
honored to have had him in our family. |

Star
2004
Star was born in May, 1990, the
last of a litter of 16 puppies. She was bottle fed and hand
raised by her first owner, Ruth Weinbrenner, for 2 yrs.
When Ruth had to move into a nursing home, she gave Star to
me, and Star became my first dog that I had been waiting for
all my life.
She came well trained and
devoted to her person. She loved car rides and accompanied
me everywhere. She gave me a world of knowledge in her 12
yrs with me. She was top dog and matriarch for many rescue
dogs to follow. I miss her bright eyes and shadow behind me
everyday. Star loved her Grandmommy and Grandaddy second to
her Mom, and then her tennis balls, chewie treats and dog
biscuits.
I and the Pups miss you, Star!
Star passed in 2004
Love, Lois & Pups
