How do I adopt a
Sheltie?
To adopt a Sheltie from
Sheltie Rescue of Central Indiana, Inc. you must first complete an application
for adoption. You can print the application from the website below, complete it,
and mail it in, or you may complete an application online. Upon receiving your completed
application a SRCI representative will call or email you to set up a visit with
you in your home. This is to review your expectations as an adoptive "parent",
your living situation (home or apartment, etc.), and how one of our wonderful
Shelties may fit your needs. This is also an opportunity for you to ask
questions. We will also check your references. Once this is all approved you
will receive a notice that you’ve been approved to adopt.
We will then work with you to
make a match between a Sheltie and your family.
Our shelties
are housed in private, caring volunteer foster homes throughout the state. You
may request consideration for a particular sheltie or we will suggest a few
shelties that match your desires and would fit into your home and lifestyle. We
will help you may make arrangements with the foster caregiver to meet the
sheltie. Please respect our advice and knowledge of the sheltie’s personality.
The fact that we know the individual sheltie, and its personality, quirks and
drives is one of the greatest benefits that you gain from adopting a sheltie
from SRCI.
As you work
through the adoption process, please understand that our first and PRIMARY
concern is the happiness and welfare of the shelties in our care, and in placing
them into loving, permanent homes. We work to match each sheltie to the
appropriate environment and lifestyle necessary for keeping her/him happy and
healthy. Because our adoption process is designed to identify these homes and
the individuals processing the applications are volunteers with families, jobs,
and pets of their own, it may take 1-3 weeks to work through your application.
The adoption fee
to adopt a puppy or young adult up to 18 months of age is $200. For adults over
the age of 18 months, the adoption fee is $150. For seniors over 8 years of age
the adoption fee is $50. Since we are a non-profit
organization and the adoption fee often does not cover the expenses of providing
routine and necessary medical care for the individual sheltie, donations above
the adoption fee are welcome, appreciated, and tax deductable to the extent allowed
by law.
Before you
decide to adopt a sheltie, please make sure you know about the breed. If you
have not previously been owned by a sheltie, visit your local library or
bookstore to obtain a book about shelties or review some of the information in
our Furkids Library. If you have questions not answered
here, you may email those questions to
